  • Tips on driving to Europe

I am driving to Austria this winter.

    Any tips on this?

For instance - can I adjust the head light beam so as not to blind oncoming drivers?

I remember L-shape headlight stickers for sale at the AA - any good?

The stickers just shade the beam area that may dazzle on coming drivers. Some motorist shops do plastic lenses that fit over your existing lamps and alter the beam pattern for continental driving. I'm not sure whether the lamps still have to be yellow for the continent but the lenses will be tinted yellow if that is still the case.

You don't need yellow light for the continent - that was France and they have given up on it for a few years now.

You ought to get some stick on beam adjusters because the dip beam swings down and left and no amount of re-pointing the headlight will stop that. The beam adjusters refract the light back to the right again - which is what your continental cousins will appreciate. Main beam is not affected as that is straight out here or abroad.

Depending on where you are going you'll need warning triangle, spare bulb set and first aid kit - all legal requirements in some countries Temporary membership of AA or similar with continental recovery might help you sleep better.

Austria ... hmmm ... snow chains?

      Have a good trip.

      Cheers

And don't forget that an EU approved can with 5L of spare fuel is a requirement.

Being able to say, "Sorry officer, I thought the speed limit was 110MPH, not 110KPH." In at least three European languages.

if driving in the french and switz alps you need a warning triangle, and snow chains minimum - i think austria/switz now demand you carry a dayglow wastecoat.

p.s. most eu countries have now banned radar detectors with the penalty of having your car impounded.

                Regards,

dont forget your green card- international car insurance permit.
First aid kit, warning triangle (2 in some countries if towing), spare bulbs (legal req.) snow chains are legally required in some heavy snow areas over the winter-carried not on unless needed (check RAC or AA)
Beacause of the time of year-dependant on how far off the lorry route you have to go, decent 5 season sleeping bag, shovel, torch, chocolate, phone and charger, good map, basic food and water, complete change of warm dry clothes, you get the idea
Hi few pics under member rigs, check out "surfing round europe" under general. Wave if you see us thanks mark
