  • Heater problem blowing cold air only

Hi i have a 2.4td Hilux and the heater seems to only blow cold air. Tt was working fine and then decided to go cold on me a week ago. Any ideas on what the problem might be and how it could be fixed????

Possibly air in cooling system, remove rad cap ,when engine cold, start engine, put heaters on hot, and top up if level goes down.
Does your temp gauge read hot when heater is blowing cold?

Probably just gone low on coolant/antifreeze , check the level, it should be up to the max mark in the bottle (which is only halfway up the bottle mind)

          Dashboard pipe with thermostat

I have another suggestion. I recently had my dashboard to pieces fitting switches and things.

On the lower left hand side (by your left hand knee) is a small grill. Behind the grill is a thermostat mounted in a plastic block. Attached to this is a pipe which seems to return to the heating system.

So I think the 'Surf Brain' uses this thermostat to measure the temperature in the cabin, and then switches to hot or cold air.

Make sure the plastic pipe is securely attached, and that the electrical wires are properly attached to the back of the plastic block.

I did have a problem where I had either very hot or very cold air. When I fixed this pipe, it worked fine.

I expect the garage I bought the Surf from knocked the pipe out when they were fitting the fog light switch and immobiliser.

          Cheers - Jimbob

Only on the 3rd gen, 2nd gen does not have climate control only AC and doesn't have the thermostat.

            Cheers

Check out the thread I put in under "2.4 egine problems" under the heading...no heating. Just an oppinion but the same happened to me a few weeks ago. Temp gauge was up but no heat thru matrix when idling, only when moving. Then eventually overheated and dumped the water back thru the expansion tank...figured it back to the water pump which didn't appear to work on idling and let the block cook when in traffic.

Check the obvious though like coolant levels (under the pressure cap..not JUST in the expansion tank) and the inlet/outlet hoses to matrix to see if they are heating up with the engine.

My heater stopped blowing warm air today, but warm air is still blowing out of the rear heaters.
I checked all the hoses under the bonnet and found the ones leading to the heater controls on the bulkhead are hard.when I squeeze them, they sound and feel as if they are blocked with something like crushed ice or similar. anyone else had this phenomenon?
worked fine all through last winter and the whole of this year, only had to top up the coolant level once!

Sounds like your hoses are perished, As they crumble inside which will feel like crushing ice.

Cheers marky, I'll whip them off in the morning and have a look.
Just a thought, does the coolant flow through the heater matrix behind the dash to the rear heater, or are the rears independant, 'cos they were blowing hot but the front was ice cold on hot setting.

Rear heater is independent if you get underneath you will see the pipes. They look like fuel lines.
