Starter motor for Surf 2.4TD - LN130
After advice here a few weeks back that an intermittant click/no start would be contacts within the starter motor I decided to replace it.
Found they wanted £150 locally to do a rebuild so went for the £170 (inc vat/p&p) new option from a mail order Jap parts specialist. When the thing arrived I was a bit put out to see it was unbranded in a plain brown box.
Then after struggling with all the bits you need to remove to get the starter off on this vehicle I could see the new starter was far smaller than the old one. Also it was missing a lug for the front support bracket...and the thread tapping was the wrong pitch for the original top bolt.
A phone round of various suppliers and this was explained. The different vehicles fitted with this engine had three different starters...a 2.0kw, 2.5kw & 2.7kw. The original starter on the LN130 should be a 2.7kw but commonly the mail order guys seem to supply the 2.0kw without mentioning this point.
I thought I'd phone Toyota to see just how much a proper new one would be....they confirmed a 2.7kw would be supplied at £425!!
Phoned round loads more folks to find a range of exchange/rebuild quotes between £189 and £332.
Following a search on here decided to replace all the contact parts, plunger plus the brush set for about £100 from Toyota. Going to order the bits tomorrow.
Fingers crossed.

BTW in a few days will write up the procedure for starter removal on the LN130 for posting here (with pics?) if anyone is interested....it's a real pig to get at.
