Which way do aerial teeth face ??

I've bought a replacement aerial as the old one has been snapped off by someone , also the nylon teeth have come out , so when i refit this new aerial which way do i need to face the teeth ? i.e towards the drivers side or towards the back of the car etc.

That's a timely post as mine has never retracted but the radio was fine so I left it alone.
Then I took it through a car wash...........
