Same problem here on the same vehicle. (3L KZN130)

Have proven the speedo drive on the gearbox and loom up to the instrument cluster. Auto electrician says that the drive in the guage itself has gone. (seems like a broken connection to me, since it comes back to life occasionally after going over bumps)

Quoted a couple of hundred quid for a new replacement via Toyota Europe, which I've politely declined so am in search of a KZN130 cluster to swap out.

Regarding KPH->MPH conversion, I have a replacement back plate for the speedo which I've never got around to fitting to mine. Got it from eBay pretty cheap a while back. It is intended to replace the KPH backplate for an import Surf, with the MPH markings in the correct places to read correctly on the KPH guage.

if barry is still around or for any others...

really common to get dry joints on the speedo circuit board. pull it it out resolder any dodgy looking solder joints.
