Electric arial

New boy, I have the original auto electric Arial and radio, the Arial broke recently and I looked on the Bay and got a replacement , only problem is when I take out the old Arial the cogged plastic strip does not show , seems to be broken off just under the mast, is there an easy way to get to the Arial body without removing a wing and door , or can I get to it by removing a wheel and wheel arch , my hands are too big to get between the door and wing, point two which is a good radio replacement? cannot get many decent channels on the original Jap version
