Someone help me please!

If anyone is on here, not being social and christmassy, can you tell me if I can fix an alternator when the pulley is spinning with the belts, quite happily, but the alternator inside isn't going anywhere.

Is the pulley nut tight?

Does it have one of those half moon shaped things (that i obviously cant remember the name of) that fits in a groove on the shaft to stop the pulley spinning. If so that could be your problem

If there is no key, the nut is tight and the shaft isn't turning, the shaft is broken behind the front bearing.

Is that a piece of metal I could replace and bodge from B&Q? or would I need that special part? or whole new unit again.

Pretty sure shaft is tapered. No key shown in diagram. Remove pulley, see if you can turn shaft and check the taper.

Silly question but are you definitely looking at the alternator and not the air con pump?

Is the battery light lit when running?

That was my first thought, but he said, in his 2nd post, something about not remembering a woodruff key, so I assumed he knew what the alternator was.

Merry Christmas Andy ..... the question is how would you see a woodruff key without removing a nut / washer / pulley ?

Spent all of my christmas working out that everything is connected properly by the looks of it (I am a bit of a n00b though)
Now the 4 lights of death have come on on my dash. That's alternator no.2 down


Quick question: Can I take the outer bits of the alternator apart and clean them to hope it works again? or is that a waste of my life and just wait for a replacement?
