any 4 inch speaker will fit in the whole but not all mounts will line up, not a problem, 2 screws will hold it fine. the more you pay the better the sound quality generally...

          No.

I have a pair of Alpine 2 ways in mine. They are truly shite, but less shite than the originals.

Sound quality or volume before distortion? Remember the front speaker's enclosure is a weirdly shaped plastic box. Hardly good for quality sound resonance.
As for volume, if the HU is good enough, some high powered units should do the trick. Thing is both ends need to be good imho...

                Shitey (models of) Alpines then.
                [Aside]
Also make sure they are sealed. Most speakers don't like running open - ie if you only use 2 screws instead of 4 to seal them air can escape and lets the diaphram vibrate too much... lots of movement, no volume/quality.

                      or
                      CS-V427

The alpines that are available in halfords fit just fine, with a little cutting off of the 'ears' on the speakers. Connectors fit directly on (albeit a little tight) and as for sealing the units - there's not a lot of point as they are open vented at one end anyways for "bass resonance" (LMFAO!). If you are going to seal them up at the speaker end you'd have to do the vent holes too. The Alpine speakers were about 25 quid from halfords and aren't exactly fantastic but they are only 25W after all!
