Rev counter sporadic fail

Just about to dive under the surf for an oil change, and wanted to take a look at an issue with the rev counter. It stops working from time to time, but then works just fine for a couple of weeks.

I'm a mechanical noob, so I just wondered if this is a regular problem with an easy fix ??
