  • Rear Window wont go down of the key switch

Sorry for another rear window question but I did not see the answer to my problem looking quickly. The rear window on the Surf I recently brought works fine off the console switch, but....... it will not go down off the key switch on the boot.
Any suggestions how I should go about fixing this issue??

    Thanks

Dirty keyswitch contacts or corroded/broken wiring to it.

Is the rear wiper 'parked' properly? Try giving it a wiggle as you operate the keyswitch.

I have taken the key swith appart and cleaned the contacts, also checked continuity of the connections in both directions, everything was good with the switch after a good clean. Refitted to my surf and the window will still only go up off the key switch. To confirm the switch was still not at fault I bypassed the switch by shorting the up and down contacts at the switch connector. Is this fault now likely to be wiring to the relay.....or the relay itself?? Is there a common point at which the wiring fails??

        Hey Ringo,

I've got the same symptom but not being able to raise the window rather than not being able to lower it:

I guess I would pass on the suggestions previously that you check the wiring in the tailgate/body, close to the hinge; try to depress the open/close switch and use the key with the tailgate flat. Can you open and close it now ok? Wiggle the tailgate to wiggle the wire and look for an open circuit.

I would like to know if it was difficult to clean the tailgate key switch... was there some magic involved? I will need to do the same.

        Thanks,
        Jon

          Hi Ptarmigan,
Thanks for the advice, I have not had time to investigate the wiring between the tailgate and body......hopefully i will get round to it this weekend. I have got a spare rear window relay to try as well.
Cleaning the contacts on the tailgate keyswitch was really easy, there is a plastic connector on the back of the keyswitch which can be taken off and then disassesembled to clean the contacts inside. Once re assembled I checked continuity of the switch in both directions with the switch definately working correctly.
Let me know if you get your rear window fixed, and what the problem finally turned out to be.

I must get round to checking out the wiring......have been too busy driving her around!!!!! Is it easy to remove the pannel covering the rear window relay so I can check continuity from the switch back to the relay??

rear window won't go down with key

The panel is fairly easy to get off just remove the trim that goes across the boot floor then gently lever the panel away from the the body you should be able to get it out far enough to get in there you the n have to remove the storeage box this is a little tricky but it will come out tucked in the corner you will find a multiplug disconnect it and check continuity between plug and where the wires go into the tailgate on mine it was the thin green wire with yellow trace that was broken hope this is of some help.

                          Rear window key switch

Amazing what you find out when you're just nosing around! I didn't even know the keyhole on the tailgate was for the rear window! So just went and tried it, all fine. I've been messing about opening the spare carrier and tailgate all the time! Doh!!
                          Crack on drive!

                            Same thread

Hi, got the same problem, window won't go down on the keyswitch. I have checked the switch and works fine both ways with continuity. I have done a continuity test through to underneath past the back bumper and the grn/yell grn/red are fine. Had trouble tracing the whi/blk as the light was fading. I seem to remember the grn/red as having 12Vdc on it with the switch in the central neutral position. Has anyone got a leccy diagram they can send me for this circuit so I can be sure to trace it correctly? Thanks all. G.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, the operation on the internal console switch is fine, so I figure the relay is good. I can hear the relay behind the plastic trim at the passenger rear boot area. Do I have to remove the whole plastic panel or can it be accessed through the side compartment. I gave that a tug, but it didn't seem to want to come out . I wasn't going to strip the side wall trim yet before I attempt to isolate the fault in the tailgate area first. Any pointers other than what I have listed already? Thanks again. G..
