  • Fan question

    Hi
I am not sure my radiator fan works, I was in a traffic jam on a seriously hot day for a hour, and I couldn't tell whether the fan came on, I think it didn't.

    Any ideas?

Also had a look in my underbonnet fuse box, next to the glow plug fuse is a space for a relay marked as Fuel heater, with no relay in it.

    Any ideas?

    thanks folks

Fuel heater is only fitted on some models with a winter pack, certainly not need in our climate, so I wouldn't worry about it. If fitted its located in the top of the fuel filter housing.

Plenty of posts on the forum regarding checking the fan, you should be able to stop it with a rolled up newspaper when the engine is cold, when hot you should not. Did your temp gauge rise whilst in the jam?

Did you notice if the temp guage started to rise whilst you were stuck in traffic? The fan does turn anyway when the engine is running although it doesn't pull a great deal of air through like this. Once it cuts in, you will hear a roar from the engine for about 20-30 secs until it brings the temp down, when it will cut out again.

If it was getting hot and not cutting in then it's probably the viscous clutch in the fan that's in need of some tlc. There's a link on here to a webpage with detailed instructions on it to repair it. I'll have a look for the link and post it here for you. Unfortunately, although I've saved a copy to my computer but that doesn't give me the original link.

You can get the silicon oil from Toyota to replace what should be there in the fan if it's leaked all the oil. It's about £5 per bottle for 18ml and you need 50ml (i.e. three very small bottles) to completely refill the fan clutch. Toyota part number is 08816-03001. Now for the bad news. There was only 1 bottle in the UK and 8 in the warehouse in Belgium. I've now got 3 of those to do mine so only 6 left (as of yesterday) in the EU!! If it is the fan clutch, get in quick, as a new viscous fan is very big bucks!!

As far as I can gather the viscous fan is working, but the little fan behind the grille appears to do nothing, I thought this was a radiator cooling fan (electric) is that right?

The viscous fan is the main engine cooling fan. The front mounted electric fan is (If my memory of the 2nd Gen serves) for your Air-con heat exchanger

I love doing write-ups and this is one I'd do IF I could only hear the fan cut in and out like peeps say it should

I never heard it cut in before I did the fan job and took it offroad and burnt this and that on a few hills but still heard no fan cut in.

I have pics and the whole shooting gallery to offer the site and be damned with the old land cruiser write up BUT theyre no good if I aint got the proof that what I did worked

that said I gave it a roasting around a field last weekend and no warning signs showed yet

The electric fan, in front of the rad at the top is for the cooling (on a 2.4). If you remove the wire from the sender on the RHS of the thermostat housing the fan should run. I have not managed to get mine hot enough to kick in even on long gradients with the caravan on the back, thrashing round Devils Pit in low ratio, trying to wheelspin down into the mud (there must be some solid ground under all mud - right?) and hours stuck in traffic on the M1/M25.

Saying that I have never seen my temp guage above 1/3 of the way into the normal range, even with over half of the rad clogged with mud. My turn will come I suppose. If I abuse her for long enough!!!
              It's only a hobby!
