If its not one thing its another

I went out to the truck earlier and found the tailgate window was down. I could smell an electrical burning smell and there is a relay clicking away like mad in the left hand side of the load area.

I whipped the inner cover off the tailgate and undone all the electrical connectors so that the motor doesn't go on fire or anything.

Anybody any ideas? I can't get the rear window up and its snowing outside.

You could connect two wires direct to the window motor, close the tailgate and using a battery or battery charger, connect the ends of the wires to raise the window. At least the truck will be secure/dry.

swap the wires over at the 12v supply to lower the glass.

Thanks bushwacker, I'll give that a go now. There was a spare rear window switch in the glovebox when I got the truck, do you think the switch thats fitted could be shorting out to open?

Possibly, they do get dirt/dust and sometimes drink spilt on them.

OK, tried putting 12v in both polarities onto the motor wires, nothing. It must be totally shot. Anything else I can try?

You could take the motor off from inside and wind it up manually, I had to do this once

Mines buggered at the moment as well, I have one of those suction cups you move glass with and just push it up with one of those. Works fine LOL!

Check the keyswitch that's in the tailgate. Mine broke ages ago, fell off and shorted out. Mine shorted out in "up" mode so I couldn't lower the glass....

                    Guys,

Thanks so much for all of your help and suggestions. It turns out that the motor isn't completely b*ggered. The battery charger I was using to try and get 12V to the motor wires expects to see a voltage through the charge wires before it'll start delivering current. I took one of my batteries out and wired it direct to the motor as bushwacker suggested and it went up.

Stormforce, I may take you up on a new motor.

SV1000 I think you're dead on, either that or the relay itself has gone south. Any ideas?

                    Thanks again to all.

Can you move window either up or down on switch (start with it midpoint). If only one direction try changing wires on back of switch and see what happens, will let you know if switch at fault. Also try disconnecting the keyswitch at same time as above.

The switch next to the driver's seat has no effect at all, its as if the key switch on the back door is permanently on "open".

I have the "back door" warning light on the dash and no rear wiper now. I think its either the relay or the switch built in to the back door lock.

Funny thing, if you turn the key to the left or press the down button, the relay makes a beeping noise a bit like one of those small alarm clocks.

Thats what it'll be then, I must have disconnected the door closed sensor wiring when I was disconnecting things in a panic trying to avert an electrical fire I'll have a look later.
