It raise the tick over to about 1500-2000ish revs.

On the old cars its all the time, on 3.0's its only when in park or neutral.

Its for boosting heating when really cold, or helping the engine idle at extreme temps. Also good for helping the battery when jump starting another car or winching.

I think it's more to do with manual or auto gearbox's. For 3rd gen manuals, it works at any time but on the auto's it only works in P or N. And even in N, it only works when the car is stopped - I was bored at the time

OK, just went by our cars. Our 89' 2.4 with a stick its just like pulling the choke out on a petrol car, revs high all the time, but the 94' 3.0 auto, when you stick it in a gear it lowers the tick over to the right revs, and goes back up again in P or N.

So your right, its an auto/manual thing.
