  • Auxilery Temp Guage on a 3.0TD

    Hi,

    I wish to install an auxilery temperature guage. I have bought a guage and sender unit. I'm just trying to deside the best place and method to install the sender unit. I have seen from other threads on this forum some people have made/bought a peice of plumbing to instal the sender into one of the rad hoses. Others seam to have found a (blanked hole) near the thermostat. I cannot seam to find the blanked hole as this would be my preference to saving making a special joint for the rad hose. Does anyone have any ideas what is the best position and method to fit a temp sender unit on a 3.0TD. Thanks for the advice Jim

    I think the blanked off hole is only on the 2.4L, as the thermostat housing is different. I put mine in the top radiator hose. A local radiator specialist made up an angled pipe for me with a "nut" brazed on for the sender but the pipe diameter was a bit small (about 32mm I think) as the Surf hose internal diameter is 38mm.

    Cost £9.99 as a "buy it now" item including postage and arrived within 5 days. Now fitted and working fine, except one of the supplied jubilee clips was slipping so would not tighten up. Had to use one off the old pipe to fit it.

        ...also why did you deside to put the sender on the top hose. As I can see the water enters the engine via the top hose and exits via the thermostat at the bottom hose. So you would think the water is at its coolest at the top hose as its just been cooled by the rad. On the other hand the top hose is closest to the head.... dam desisions, desisions...maybe I should instal two extra guages one on the top hose and one at the bottom, or is that becoming obsesive?

            I'm obsessive and yes Iv'e got sensors both top and bottom (or I will have by this weekend).You can drill and tap the top ally housing to take a sensor.

            BTW I always thought the water circulated the other way?

              This is the old way I had the sensor, I am in the process of tapping out a M16x1.5 thread in the housing that bolts to the head. The picture shown is not an ideal way to do It as the hose is slightly kinked to accomodate the adapter!

                My new unit is about 6.5cm long. The middle bit is about 2.5cm and there's 2cm each end to attach the hose. As europa88 says, it does mean you get a slight kink in the pipe as there's not an aweful lot of straight section on the top hose but if you cut out the right amount it will fit.

                The hole for the sender takes a standard threaded sender. Not sure what it is but from memory it's a BSP thread size. My sender fitted without any problem. I did try tapping the aluminium housing on the engine block initially but it didn't work well. TonyN did open it out to take the larger sized adapter that came with the guage but when I tweaked it to get a good water seal the casing split, which is why I got the original bodged up adapter made.

                As regards positioning, you need the sender in the top hose as that's where the hottest water is before it goes through the radiator and back into the engine. If you put it in the bottom hose it would always read cool and you would have no idea that the engine was overheating (until you disappear in a cloud of steam).

                    Thanks for all the tips and advice.
                    One thing I would like to clarify as I'm a little confused, where is the thermostat on the 3.0.
                    I thaught it was at the bottom hose. The reason I ask is (I could be wrong) but normally the water flows in at the thermostat on other vehicles I've seen. At first when i saw the surf motor I thaught it would flow in the top, but after further inspection I desided it must flow in at the bottom as thats the direction of the thermostat (which I presume is at the bottom hose)....am I wrong?
                    or (presuming the thermostat is at the bottom) does the thermostat let the water out the block? thus water is entering the engine at the top? As suggested earlier on this thread.
                    Totally fine for me if I'm wrong as I have not done the mod yet but would like to know for certain so I understand the motor better.
                    What do you guys think.

                      The thermostat is in the bottom hose of a sort ,but on an ally pipe housing attached to the block by the turbo. I think the water enters the block through the thermostat this way!
