  • indicator relay location

    hi guys,

can anybody tell where i find the flasher (indicator) relay on my surf, one of my electronics mates has told me there is a relay desiged for use with LED bulbs, i got 1 off of ebay just need to fit it now.

from the wiring diagrams i have its in the dash area on the left somewhere, is this the fabled fuse location behind the glovebox.

    cheers once again

i think it's tucked away behind the dash on the drivers side somewhere, you should be able to get a good idea from where the clicking is with the indicators on (make sure it's indicators, not hazards that are on - hazards will be a separate flasher unit).

On quite a few cars it's in the steering column, at the base of the indicator stalk, but i don't think it is on the surf, then again i haven't had my dash apart that far for a while, so it could be.

Yeah Nero is right I just changed mine a few weeks ago..

It's on the driver side behind the sound speaker..
if u lay on ur back and put ur head underneath the stearing wheel u can see it sat on a little hook just behind the speaker..
      Good luck mate.
One day at the time I guess..

I fitted relays when I used resistors for indicators.

If it's anything like mine you will be impressed.

I just put in a couple of load resistors for my LED indicators, still running existing relay.

Pull it towards the rear of the car. There is an L shaped bracket that is attached to the bulkhead. The flasher slides off it towards the drivers seat.

I had mine out last night as I had one of the buzzers to fit for towing a trailer. If anyone ever gets one from towsure to fit at the front, throw the instructions away and fit it between the fuse box and flasher unit, not between the flasher unit and the switch as the instructions tell you. Following the instructions will cause the flasher unit to buzz until the fuse blows.

I finally worked this out after buying one for the boot. I don't like the ones in the boot as they get covered in luggage and cannot be heared anyway.

Isn't that a good thing? The one's that fit in the drawer in the garage are better.

I don't like them I have to admit, even if they are a legal requirement. They seem relatively pointless to me as I can walk around the trailer and see the indicators working. Ok, a bulb can blow while I am travelling, but sow could any number of other things fail too. It would make more sense to have something like this on the brake lights so that they can be tested when you are on your own. I am tempted to wire the one I got that goes in the boot to the brake lights and put a switch on the earth so I can turn it off once I have checked them.

Has anyone ever had the buzzer checked at the side of the road by the police? Come to that has anyone ever seen the police lay underneath a vehicle looking for a type approved label on the tow bar?

according to the wiring diagrams i have the flasher relay is somewhere in the region of the steering wheel. i had the steering surround and dash off last night and still cant find the poxy thing. have found a total of 8 other relays so far tho.

Am i right in thinking that if u remove the flasher relay, the ticking noise stops if u have the indicators on.

sorry if i'm being dense but i won't let this little relay beat me.

Yes, it's the flasher unit that does the ticking. If you remove it, the ticking stops, but so do the indicators. It's a bit of a swine to find. Remove the cover above the pedals. Remove the screws holding the speaker to the dash frame. Reach through the opening for the speaker. The flasher unit is a little bit higher than the speaker, but can only be reached through the speaker aperture. It helps if the flashers or hazards are turned on. I tried on two occasions to find mine before I eventually found it on the third go when I took the speaker out it was easy to find.

Imagine trying to find it if it had stopped working and didn't click!
