  • Rear Amplifiers

I still have no sound from my rear speakers, despite the aerial working correctly. Is it possible to run a wire from the stereo (or even the ignition) directly to the rear amplifier?

If so, where exactly is the amplifier? is it just one or is there one each side?

The other option is disconnecting the amplifier and wiring the speakers straight to the stereo, is there any reason why this wouldn't work?

On my '93 2.4 the amps are inside the plastic box that the rear speakers are housed in.

I can't see any reason why you can't disconnect the speakers from the amp and run them direct, although I have a funny feeling that the speakers may be a 2 ohm load which your HU may not be able to drive well..

I had a horrible feeling it would be one each side. Hopefully they will be connected to each other so powering one will power the other.

I don't expect an after market amplifier would be too good at powering 2 ohm speakers either so it looks like I either get the amps working or change the speakers.

Any amp brand worth its salt should easily power a pair of 2 ohm speakers.

2ohms is nothing for a dedicated amp... or you could replace the factory speakers with some decent ones...

I had read somewhere that the rear speakers and amps in the Surf were supposed to be 1st class.

Anyone have any instructions for removing the panels from the back, preferably with some nice pics?

That's a great link. Thanks for that.

Turns out that a previous owner has unplugged the speakers from the amps and run fresh wires. No idea where the wires end up though. I simply reconected the speakers to the amps and they worked (at least they work if the aerial is up) Is it possible to run a fresh wire from the stereo (or even the ignition) to power the amps regardless of the aerial? I don't see why not, if any one knows which wire is which at the amps it would help as I don't want to blow anything. I tried a voltmeter across the terminals in the plugs but it didn't make much sense, I had a number of unexpected voltages showing and nothing clearly showing 12 volts.

But it works and that's the main thing. And boy what a difference they make!
