  • Is there space for 6x9 speakers behind doors cards?

Hi there, I have a 1994 ssr-g, just wondering if there is enough space behind either the front or rear door cards for 6x9 speakers as I cant find anywhere else to fit them. Want to check before I take the cards out and inevitably break all the retaining pins!
    Many thanks.

No! you'd have to mount em in pods on the surface, mind you these are only 4", 6x9's are in similar pods in the back

it's unlikely you would find the clearance depth wise, there are holes in the inner skin large enough for the back of the cones to sit in if that's what you mean, but you'd still have to space the speakers forward so they would sit around an inch or so proud of the door cards.

The best place for them as far as space is concerned would be the front bottom corners of the front doors, you'd have to move the door storage pockets to the back of the doors.

Basically, yes it can be done, but do it properly or it'll look shit.

You would, invariably, get better sound with a set of components, and to be honest it'd probably be easier to fit them into the surf than it would 6x9s anyway.

Thanks for the info guys, going to go with the speaker pods I think as I already have infinity 6x9's. Funny that of all vehicles, there is not much room for them in a hilux! Any other suggestions for fitting placements would be appreciated.
        Many thanks.

I thought that the stock speakers in the front of the Surf were 4" (read it somewhere), if they are 4" why didn't you just replace the original ones, bad positioning for acoustics? Or are they simply not 4"?

                @breakdowntruck2

I was asking Popeye about his setup not Bboy02s. Unless i'm reading it wrong he said he put 4" speakers in his pod and his photo seems to confirm this (round, non oval speakers in a pod).I was just wondering why he chose to put his speakers in a pod and not in instead of the stock speakers; which he is presumably not using anymore.

                Excuse me if i'm mistaken,
                S.h.

The original front speakers are under 4", i did put the 4's in there originally but the sound was cr@p and drummed through the dash something wicked, and it was a bl00dy tight fit with some alteration, plus no room for enclosures round em, the ones in the doors are 4" round but you could fit 6x9's there, their handy for resting ya knee on when driveing but you have to avoid kicking em when you get in and out, pods were made from ply, fi-glass resin, filler and speaker cloth, plus thin foam to "pad" it a bit, this is the rear one, cheapo led
grills from ebay, i rad to wireing through fluted sheathing with end terminals to avoid the aggro of pulling wires through the door harness, works ok and dont look too bad i think,

you'd think these "big" 4x4's would have plenty of room for speakers and such would'nt ya, their just glorified estate bodys on a 4x4 chassi

Look good Popeye, Im thinking I might just buy some 6x9 spacers and put them in the rear door cards as these doors are used less. Im going to disconnect the stock speakers in the front and rear as they suck. I have a 12" infinity sub for the rear as well. What do you recon to that plan? Im real interested to see what other speaker solutions people have come up with!

That sounds ok mate, never thought of the back doors the stock speakers leave a lot to be desired although i aint a fan of that rap thump thump monkey music i do like a bit of volume on me heavy metal
the rear ones have a built in amp which made bugger all difference as far as i could tell and i've junked one when i fitted the compressor in that side so now i've no rear speakers at all, one day when i'm flushed i might get a decent amp and speaker set up tho i know nowt about in car hi fi so i take it an infinity amp is a goodun? BDT's got a nice big sound system in his, you can feel the bodywork jumping when he cranks it up

                      good luck with it
