  • Double DIN ?

Do Surfs have 2 DIN slots ?

Looking at buying a Surf and wondered if im going to be able to fit my CD player and separate DVD player.

yup, the factory stereo is a double din unit, so you could replace that with two single din units stacked one on top of the other.

Unless i'm very much mistaken the 2nd Gen Hilux has a single DIN stereo.

I'm thinking about trying to convert mine into a double DIN size so that I can fit my stereo and a motorised touch screen in nicely. The previous owner of my car put in an aftermarket stereo and didn't do a great job to say the least.

I know that this is from a different era but is this the right part for the 2nd Gen Surf? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-HILUX-V...QQcmdZViewItem it just looked so similar I thought i'd ask?

I cannot comment on a 2nd gen pickup, but a 2nd gen Surf does have a double din socket.

If it has a single din stereo and a small cubby hole under it then you should be able to fit a double din unit, just remove em both and the frame's ready to take the double.

Many apologies, of course you're right! I took off the surrounds and replaced my single DIN stereo this morning, my cubby hole was the second "DIN" in the double DIN.
The previous owner had taken lumps out of the dash in order to fit the old stereo in so I must look into finding someone near by breaking a Surf.

Also POPEYE, that's an interesting setup you have there. I'm looking into installing a carputer, I was originally looking into installing a motorised fold out monitor so I could have that and my Sony stereo mounted in the double DIN but they're turning out to be quite expensive. Maybe I could go for something like yours and find somewhere else for the stereo?

What screen is that and did you have to do much fabrication to make it fit well? I can't find many screens made to fit a double DIN slot, here's one example I did find http://store.mp3car.com/ProductDetai...ctCode=DSH-013
that shouldn't take too much modification?

              Thanks.

Well on the breaking front we have Nero, Stormforce, Lord Lucan, Supersurf, Vagrant No2, & Woodzie (Biohazzard) to name but a few, there are others as well.

Any of these should be able to help you out.

                    @Antshiel.
There are alright but i'm looking for one that I can connect to a computer to use the touchscreen as an input device through USB. At first glance (i'm only starting to look into this now) most of the ones on the web just use the touchscreen to control the features built in to the stereo (Radio, DVD etc.) which isn't quite what i'm looking for.

Got mine from these guys, chinese made cheapo's from germany, dont know if they do one that supports computers tho, thought mine supported sat-nav but it dose'nt, it bolted straight onto the original single din and cubby hole brackets, only mod i needed was spacer the unit forward about 10mm (as the drop down screen fouled the dash surround) and enlarge the surround a bit, i believe others have'nt had to cut any away atall, had a bit of a game with the aeriel jacks tho (TV) as the aeriel that comes with it is naff and the freeview box and amplified aeriel i got have standard coax jacks, the unit has a mono 3.5 jack, so had to do some adapting, got a right angled 3.5 jack from maplins and soldered that on the head end, adaptors are no goog as they stick out the back to far and the unit wont sit back in far enough, the adaptor's catch on the air box behind it,

glad you said that mate! i know what to do now

question for you know (or anyone) now ive taken my double din stereo out and replacing it with a single din stereo....how do the fixing brackets work?? there is nowhere on the new stereo cage to screw them back onto? plus the new cubby hole sitting ontop of the stereo will just be a universal black plastic thing which again has no holes to screw the brackets back into so i can bolt it back onto the car??

im assuming i have to remove the cage on the new stereo and replace it with a new double din cage that will have the holes in it to re fit the brackets and just have the plastic cubby hole sitting losely in it and ontop.
                        ??

The mounting brackets bolt directly to the stereo - you don't use the cage. (or the fascia trim )

                          Rob.

but there is only one hole on the new stereo? so i just leave the other one out then?

: IGNORE that! i just took the cage off and low and behold there were the other holes! lol job sorted. cheers anyway mate.

The universal cubby I had had holes that the tabs on the mounting brackets fitted into.
