Changing the alt is not as bad as it sounds. I just took mine out and drilled a broken bolt out of it. Take the battery out of the drivers side, remove washer bottle from in front. Remove 4 bolts holding A/C pump on(but dont disconnect any hoses) follow hoses along top of engine about 15" along remove retaining clip. You can now lift A/C pump out on to top of engine. Alt is accesible.
Jobs a goodun. If i can do it anyone can.
details are all on the forum if u do a search.

You should check charge rate with some items in use , such as heated rear screen , heater fan on full and headlights on full beam . Alternators only charge when their is a demand , unlike a dynamo which will charge all the time .
No high power use = low charge.Rick...Member of 1st Gen club. ONE LIFE ... GET ONE !!

Alternator
I think it may be a good idea to have the unit checked by a good auto sparkie.
The reason I say this is even an alternator has a couple of excitation brushes and also an avr.
I had one on my boat go bad and a set of brushes later £21 total including time and parts and was a good one again.

Well im back on the road with a charging voltage of 13.9 volts took 5hours in total from taking my tools out to putting em away- in that time i've also changed from having only one almost buggered alt belt to running with two again and having to change the plug on the back of the alt mine was round style and new one was three pins in a row and also all the small vacum pipes for the 4x4 system and all the small vac pipes in the engine bay so i got all lovely blue silicone pipes for that lot, i wanna go the whole hog now and do every pipe in the engine bay!must resist that though!
Still to find out if it is a vacume problem on my 4x4 system but we'll see tomorrow night if not it will be checking the two solinoids in the engine bay and then, well i dont know which way to turn after checking that lot.lol
Oh and a big cheers to Richard for the alternator aka stormforce
