drivers door light Q?

ive not long had my 1994 3.0td surf and noticed the red light in the door doesnt come on when the door is opend. ive noticed that if the door is closed and any othe door is opened the drivers door light lights up with the rest. the door switch works as the interior lights come on.any ideas? ta
