Can anyone enlighten me on the highest wattage headlamp bulbs suitable for a 2nd generation 2.4.. I have been told too high wattage lamps will fry the loom. Is it a windup or not? I was thinking of 100/90 watt to improve it.
Thanks.

If you want to light up your town you can get a loom upgrade. Depends how bright you want em.
to go up to that power I would upgrade the loom, I would also be a little warey as those wattages are for off road use only - upset too many folks with over bright lights and you could be having to fit new headlights!!! (the easiest way is to take out the grill!)
I done the loom, it's a $$$$ to make it work reliably, but the difference is incredible, even without uprating the bulbs it improves it, but with 100/80 bulbs the lights are so much better, and i've had no complaints about them being dazzling. Aslong as they're adjusted properly you'll be fine.

residual current, the circuit seems to just hold enough power to not switch the relays off, meaning the headlights stay on sometimes, or randomly turn back on after they've been turned off.

Did you byass the original relay or not. I'd be inclined to completely bypass the original loom and start fresh from the switch, would that help any?
nah i cut the headlight plug off the old loom and soldered onto the wires there. It probably would be easier to take it back further, but the plan originally was to leave the old loom completely intact, but after altering it a couple of times to cure the above problem i think i've now stripped it back as far as the engine bay fusebox.
The main beam isn't too bad, but the dipped beam is just life- threatening. I dunno if the bulbs are the original Japanese- spec ones, they've got a weird green cast to them? I thought it was quite cool in the summer, but now... .
What's the highest output bulb I can swap to without:-
a- cooking the existing wiring, and
b- not getting sworn at by passing motorists?
The current bulbs are so poor I suspect just changing to 55w Halogens would be a big improvement, but if it's a bit of a job to get at them, I might as well fit some kick- ass ones while I'm in there.
