IM fitting a winch, and want to put an isolator in the cab!! how do i go about that?? with out taking the thick high amp cables into the cab? relay maybe?? any advise would be great!! thanks...

Hi, The old type starter relay/solenoid should do the trick, if you can find one. (the collectors car magazines have suppliers). You would need to limit the coil current if it was to be energised for long periods, a little experimenting would show how little current is needed to hold in after first energisation nad you could use an ignition switch to put a resistance in line, ie ignition on would have resistance in line, start would give full energisation. Alternatively use a 24v solenoid.

Hi i already have a solinoid to activate the winch, im wanting a way to isolate the power to the solinoid so i can if required stop the winch via the isolator if there is any probs, ie the solinoid sticking on!!

but they're not cheap.

Winch solenoid packs are pretty reliable, they may even have a failsafe built in. I've seen a few fail, but never leaving the winch spooling in/out. Sealed contactors or an albright solenoid pack may be the cheaper way to go, and if necessary a separate isolator mounted near the winch.

thanks nero! i spotted them too and thought they were a little expensive.
My 2 main concerns were the solinoid failing and the solinoid being tampered with...

I could poss stop the tamper one by fitting the solinoid in the engine bay!! but the fail safe part is to fit an isolator or some sort of disconnector switch but didnt want all them amps going in the cab..

Without knowing what kind of current a winch will draw, it's difficult to advise.

However, if it is an isolator and will only change state when the winch is NOT running, it will not need to be as heavy duty as one which can be switched when the winch is under load.

I use one of these just put inbetween the battery and the winch power cable.I no my winch can draw upto 260 amps at full power but i never get anywere near that amount of amps under normal winching and the cut off switch has been fine for about £6.00 you cant go wrong
