  • Immoliser - how do I know

I have recently purchased a 1997 ssr-x limited surf, after owning a 1991 model for six years. I need to know for insurance purposes-
    1. Does it have an immoliliser
    2. How do I tell
    3. If I do, how do I get a certificate for it

On a totally unrelated theme, having installed my own sound ststem, can the rear window AV film ariels be used for radio reception so the wing ariel is not needed?

I don't think 3rd Gens had alarms or immobilisers as factory fit.

If it has been retro fitted, you can go to a firm that fit them (car audio specialists normally fit them) & get them to supply you with a certificate of fitment. Try & stick with a VSIB accredited installer.

For insurance purposes it will need to be a thatcham 1 or 2 depending on the company.

I have just renewed my insurance with Adrian Flux & they didn't need an approved alarm/immobilser.

To test if it has an immobiliser do the following.

      1. Drive to Liverpool or any other major city.
      2. Park is a poorly lit area and leave doors open.
      3. Leave car for 2 days.

If it is still there when you return then it has an immobiliser fitted and if the car has gone then you need to find it, then fit an immobiliser.

Insure with Lifesure, they don't need you to have one fitted

If it has an immobiliser, it will need to be switched off before you can get the main dash ignition lights or start the engine. This is done by a button on the keyring or a little receptor on the dash you press a coded thingy against.

If you have one you can phone local alarm installers and ask if they undertake annual services and issue certificates for insurance purposes. Your outcome will depend upon the make of immobilser but my full alarm system was done for £30.00.

                Cheers,
