  • Stereo - Pre outs required?

    Hiyah folks,

I have had enough of only radio 2 or Billy Idol (only tape I have!)

    Please could someone advise:
I want to simply fit a cd radio but do i need preouts and if so how many pairs, or just normal speaker outputs.
I want to just replace stereo not rip half of truck out!

    Thanks

pre out are only for subs, amps and dvd players, so no you don't need them unless thats what your up 2. but most stereo's come with pre outs any way.

one other thing if your thinking of fitting a new one just remember you have to take out all the lower dash.

No seperate amp in the surf then?

Main reason i asked was that i was under the impression there was a factory fitted amp in the surf, this incorrect?
      Thanks

if your thinking of having rear speakers as well then run some new cables in that way any amps that are there get by-passed.

The issue is that I have front & rear speakers already, stereo is great for what I want in all ways bar the radio 2 and tape only.
Was just hoping I could buy one of the many stereos out there and just plug and play it without to much, if any fiddling!
              Have you done one?

yeah i fitted my sony cd/dvd player, all you might need is and adapter, other than that it's a straight swap, but as i said before don't forget you have to remove half the dash to do this.

                here's a link http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/workshop/dash2.htm

The problem with the factory fitted amp, i believe, is something to do with it runing off the power aerial output rather than the remote wire found on newer radios, it shouldn't be too hard to get round. It also only applies to some makes/models of headunit, basically the ones which only raise the aerial when you're listening to the radio (i think kenwood and some sony, there may be others), hence only turning on the amp when listening to radio and not CD.

I could be wrong but i think this is the jist of the problem. If you change it and find you got problems, you can either run new speaker wires to the rear speakers to bypass the amps or between us on here we should be able to give you advice on how to jig the wires about behind the stereo to sort the problem out.
