  • Missing Switch

It would seem that some surfs have a switch on the front map lights which allow them to come on when the doors are opened - for some reason mine havn't, just the 2 buttons for turning them on manually, if i acquire a whole light unit with the switch will it work via the doors or do i need to do anything else ? - i've attached a photo of the unit with switch

Odd isn't it how they delete useful stuff!

I'd say you need the whole unit, as you need the switch, and relevent wiring in the unit. If you can't the grey cover, I guess vutting the hole out isn't hard.

The UK 4runners don't even have the map lights there, just the middle light above your head.

Thanks Tony, why get rid of something like that eh !?

i can get hold of a complete unit from a breakers, just wanted to make sure it would "plug" in ok to my existing loom and magically work

I'd imagine the loom is there, you might want to check for a 12v feed in the connector block in the roof when you open the doors.

At worst you'd only need to run a wire from the center dome light.

all right then try this way open the doors and with the ends of the wires that are there stick your tongue on them to see if you get a shock at least you'll know if there is power.
Either that or read the instructions that come with the tools...

The act that you got them indicates vaguely that the wiring is there for the door trigger's or pin switches so i would say there's a fair chance there's wiring there at the map lights aswell. If not then like tony says you can take a feed from these and run it up the door pillar and over to the lights fairly easily.

The other alternative would be to find where the feed to the lights goes from the fuse box and make the connection there, or probably not, i think i'm talking out my ar$e now coz that feed is switched in the light unit anyway. S$$$$ that last sentence.

for the price of the used unit i think i'll just buy it and plug it in and see what happens, i reckon there is a good chance it will work

thanks for your advice - as always
