  • hazard lights work..inidcators dont HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ive managed to knacker my indicators after pluging in a dodgy trailer on my 1998 2.4td hilux pickup...initially it blew the indicator fuse..which i replaced and it worked ok for a bit...but now on the second outing with the dreaded trailer.. it killed my indicators ! The indicator fuse is fine and the hazard lights flash..
where should i look to fix this problem...thanks in advance

(btw this all happens with the trailer disconected)

Did you put a higher rated fuse in? If so my guess would be that the flasher relay unit is now knackered. Mind you, if you have a towbar fitted, the electrics should be via their own relays anyway.
    It's only a hobby!

The fuse was the correct 10amp replacement..what confuses me is the flasher relay works for the hazards.. so it should for the indicators??

Is it still the original radio as side lights ans warning alarms go through some of them

the radio is not the original...i think im gonna have to open the dash up and look for any obvious signs of duff wiring...

          tho any more suggestions welcome...

Don't quote me on this but do you have one relay for the hazzards and one for the indicators?
Probably not, but its just a thought. If the fuse is fine and you know all the bulbs are fine, surely it has to be the relay?

No there is only 1 flasher unit (relay) and it's tucked up behind the clocks and is a proper pain to get to, there will be a differant fuse for the indicators to the hazzards, check the heated window and the demister, the indicators could be on the same fuse

Hi guys, does anyone remember / know how this issue was resolved?

I've got the same problem as of this morning, hazards work but directional indicators don't. If it makes a difference i've got a 3rd Gen 3.0 TD Hilux Surf.

                I'd really appreciate any help.

                Thanks

                Si

My guess is the fuse. The hazards are on a different fuse to the flashers. Could also be the hazard switch as this disconnects the flasher circuit when it turns the hazards on. Had a lot of trouble with them on Fords with burnt contacts.

Thanks SoundsDigital, I've just bought a big set of fuses and a multimeter / continuity tester, so will check it out tonight.

I've spoken with a guy at work who used to be a mechanic and he said it could be the flasher relay unit as there is a seperate one for the hazards and the indicators, so i'm looking into that too. Also another page on the net recommended checking the ground/earth connection wiring in the rear light housing as this can also affect the indicators.

                    Will report back when fixed.

All sorted, it was a blown fuse, caused by an exposed wire in the boot touching the metal boot floor whilst going over a very bumpy road.

So fuse replaced and wire taped up and my indicators are working again

Now i've got a nice multimeter and spare fuses, so next time i hopefully won't have to ask silly questions before checking the basics.

Must be a long time since he was a mechanic. I started in the motor trade 20 years ago and we were working on cars over 10 years old then. There were a few with a separate flasher unit for the hazards and horn, but very few. Some at that point didn't even have hazard lights. They all ended up with the single flasher unit very quickly (a flasher unit is quite expensive if you ever buy a new one so no surprise they altered the wiring)

Hazard lights not working, indicators fine.

Hi I have a KZN130. The indicators work but the hazard warning lights have stopped. With the button out the indicators work. With the button depressed the indicators stop working. Any ideas to the cause. I have taken the switch out and sprayed contact cleaner in to it. No better. Is there a way of testing the switch? Thanks.
