New Surf Owner Needing Help

Having read the forum deatail under SVA.

I Have no rear fog light.

should it have passed SVA without?

Should I be Worred?

Should I just fit a light?

Should the garage that I brought the car from give me all the vehicles previous doccumentation?

What Now?

I dont want to hi jack your thread but I have been wondering the same as I have a MOT certificate and no Rear Fog Light. Presumably when I get the MOT done in June it will fail due to no fog light.

I am a bit pi$$ed at this as this is going to cost me a few quid to do.

I was thinking of ringing the people who did the currentMOT and threatening legal action/reporting them to the ministry for transport if they dont fit as they should not have passed last time.


Anyone know where Steven and I stand?

Welcome to the forum!

The rear foglight is definately a legal requirement for MOT. Check this out:

I am amazed that they got through the SVA without it, they are even more strict!

Assuming both your vehicles are under 10 years old. If they are over 10 years old they don't need an SVA but yes should not have picked up an MOT certificate without one.
Would suggest you contact the garage/dealer you bought the motors from and ask them to point out where the fog light is.
If they have difficulty in doing so just say in that case I would like one fitted now before the retest is due or I may have to contact someone about how my vehicle has an MOT you arranged but no fog light?

Just to double check, make sure there are no illuminated switches or any switches for that matter you cannot account for.
Most common places to fit the fog light switches are to the right lower side of the dash (sort of opposite the ignition switch) or the centre console.

Just to add to that, All fog lamps must have an illuminated switch, also should not work without sidelamps at least.

i always took the foglights off when i had mini's
not sure if there's a date after which you gotta have one?
but they always passed the MOT.
i thought then that it was one of those things if you got it, it's gotta work. but if you don't then you don't!

I think that is only the case with vehicles older than 1980.

Very pleased with the quick response.
I have phoned the Dealer who said that he can't explain why the fog light isn't fitted but if I return the car he will fit one no problem.

Hi Steve.
Glad you've been able to sort your problem out. When all the works been done, regardless of the outcome, could you put your thoughts and experiences with your dealer in the "dealer category" so we can have more input on this subject.

Fog Light?

Just as a quick addendum - when I looked at my Surf at the dealer, I noticed the lack of fog light even though it had a current MoT (10 months remaining). I had experience of importing a car previously, so I know you need a fog light after a certain year of manufacture - so I insisted on a new MoT.

Luckily (for me) they found (and fixed) £300 quids worth of work which needed doing, including adding a fog light. They explained that they couldn't understand how the car could have passed an MoT previously, but that was how it came to them!

Makes you wonder:

a) How many cars are roaming around out there with dodgy MoT's.
b) Why dealers don't check these things out when they get a car in.
c) Why a (not so) keen amateur car owner like myself can spot something like this when a professional dealer can't!

i've taken a car for an MOT before and while talking i told the fella it has only done a few hundred miles since the last mot... he looked at it, said "yeah that looks clean" and wrote out a ticket!!
