  • 4Runner rear fog light relay

Aaaarghhh! This is doing my head in, the rear fog light has packed up on my 4Runner, and I can't work out why it isn't working.
The bulb and bulb holder work fine, and I've managed to trace the cable as far as the passenger footwell, and there's continuity between there and the light.
There is power at the switch, when the sidelights are turned on, and the switch appears to work as there is continuity between two of the terminals when it is pushed in.
I've replaced the bulb in the switch, which I think is only for backlighting anyway, and I've had the dials out and replaced the warning light bulb with one that I know to work.
I've swapped the switch with one out of a friend's Hilux, which looked absolutely identical, and that made no difference.
The wire that comes from the fog light is a different colour to the wires that go into the switch, so I assume that there is a relay somewhere in the circuit, but even though I've had most of the dash out I can't find where the wires go as they get bundled into the main harness and don't seem to come out again.
I've checked every fuse under the bonnet and inside the driver's footwell with a meter, and I've pulled out every relay I can find, and put power across them to check they work, and tested them with a meter whilst doing so and they're all fine.
I've had the glove box out and looked for fuses behind there and there weren't any.
I've now run out of ideas.
Is there any thing else I can check? Does anyone know which relay is for the fog light? Every other electrical item on the car works, including all inside and outside lights, the cigar lighter etc so I don't suspect a fuse unless there is one that only does the rear fog light and it's somewhere I haven't looked.
    Help!

    Rear Fog Lamp.

    OK,
You need to do a Search and type in "Fog Lamp Relay" you will see lots of advice / assistance / anecdotal stuff....why ? well my friend, these lamps are not required in Japan, and are therefore fitted by "the importer / sva guys" with other stuff to ensure your truck complied with UK road vehicle law. Snag is there is more than one way of fitting them, some dont actually comply EXACTLY but do light when the mot tester needs to check it out, so where is your relay, dunno, but I would suggest you also check out the grounding of this lamp (yup - earth fault - mebbe)....Is the relay in the trunk under the carpet, behind the plastic surround...???? Or further forward, behind the wee switch just held in with a cable tie....

Thanks Peter, I have done a thorough search and read everything, but this is a UK car, not an import, with the fog light in the rear tailgate fitted at the factory.
I've checked the earth at the connector behind the fog light and it's fine.
      Any other ideas?

        Hi again,
I should have read that your car is 4 Runner, my mistake...
All my written "stuff" relates to foreign Surf's, Prado's etc... HOWEVER
Your truck may not have a relay - that's why its so elusive - its just wired maybe even pickaback onto the rear light circuits, check it out ! If so, is there a didgy (or even dodgy) or broken, connection twixt fog lamp and rest of lights.
Get your hands on a power probe....

          Fixed It!

Hi Uplander, I've fixed it! In desperation I earthed out one of the live terminals on the connector for the switch, trying to blow the fuse so I could work out which one it was, and....heard a whirring noise.

This is deeply embarrassing. The whirring noise was of course the headlamp adjusters, the switch for which is next to the fog light switch...at some point I've managed to transpose the multi pin connectors. Simple as that.

I shall now crawl under a small stone and spend the rest of the week there. Thanks for trying to help.
