How do you undo the lens to get at bulbs, and in my case
replace a cracked lens

Drop the tailgate down and there are two bolts on either side to remove the lenses.

I was hoping this part of the answer actually
had visions of taking out the interior to change a bulb

Once the bolts are out you need to ease the lens towards the outside of the truck (ie not rearwards away from the truck but to the side. There are two rubber grommets holding the lens on and it takes a little pressure to overcome their grip).

Do you mean seperate the coloured lens from the back half?
I don't think you can 'cos they're bonded.

I haven't looked at unit to closely, just ordered used one,
thinking it would be a lense only.

so a complete moulding that just slots the bulbs in, is better still

Yep. Lens and body all moulded together as in pic.
