Have a look in the footwell, behind the heater matrix and operate the demister. You will see a couple of levers (try to) operate. If they dont move, remove the accumalation of fluff/dust with a soft brush and spray with drylube or similar. That said, the screen demisters on the Surf aren't the greatest when they are working properly.

    BTW. Welcome to the forum
    It's only a hobby!

hi mate here is the problem with your heater not heating the windscreen, remove the lower facia panel you know the little grey one with the silly pocket on it in front of your gear lever set up, normally 1 screw either side. in behind there at the back of a silver box is the remote actuator. a little servo like those on remote control aircraft.
you'll find the metal actuator arm moves the cable that controls the levers etc on the side of the heater box.
you'll see that the cable has broken from its mounting eyelet. hence no operation!!
repair---- crimp on an eyelet onto the cable and re adjust the position of the main cable on its clamp,,, you may need to trim off a little more of the sleeve,,, any issues drop me a mail

        cheers
