  • Another cigarette lighter problem.....

Hi there, got myself a 1993 2.4TD surf and love it to bits! The cigarette lighter doesn't work though and I need it for GPS/Phone etc.

    I've read all the other posts I can find, having done a search here. Some questions though;

1 The red wire to the lighter is dead, am I right in saying this is the live feed?

2 Where does this live feed come from?

3 Does this feed have an in-line fuse and if so where is it?

4 How do I gain access to the rear of the lighter - which panels do I need to remove.

5 I also need to replace the front (and probably the rear) speakers - are there any resources on the net to show how to gain access? Whenever I try to remove trim panels I always seem to do a lot of damage and things never seem to go back as they were.

Thanks for any help here - I know that's a lot of questions.

Okey dokey, here's the link for dash removal/ speaker access.

    http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/workshop/dash2.htm

And here's the link for rear trim/ speaker access.

    http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/workshop/rear_trim.htm

And here to access the lighter socket/ radio wiring.

If you can't find the fuse for the lighter socket, get yourself an 'inline fuse holder' and a 15amp fuse, and run a new length of identical gauge wire directly to the battery. Put the fuse holder as near to the battery as possible tho.

      BRILLIANT!!

Thanks a lot Vince - armed with this info I should be able to diagnose the fault or as you say I can always run a new feed directly from the battery.

My God what did I do before the internet!

      Thanks again!

        No worries!

I'll be doing this mod. sometime this week, so it looks like I'll be ripping the interior panels out aswell!

That looks like a good idea that Vince, lots of interesting reading on that site, thanks. I never know how to remove trim panels without scratching/tearing/splitting etc, I just might have a look out in Halfords or wherever for some trim panel tools to make life a little easier.....

As for sleeping in the Surf, I tried it for size and I'll be avoiding that if at all possible!

          Cheers

Right, I thought I'd just follow this thread up with what I found so that the information's there for everyone else.

The lighter socket has a red live feed and a white/black earth. It was the original fitting, as all the connections to the loom were factory ones. On the back of the lighter socket there is an integral fuse wire. So no need for an inline fuse. It's a clever little arrangement actually, very neat. Anyway, the integral fuse was blown and so the fix was simply to replace the whole fitting and install an inline fuse - job done. Many thanks to Vince for the links to help remove the trim panels - much appreciated.

Now I've decided to replace the front speakers whilst I have the panels down - always sumink to do!
