  • Replacement Ariel

    Hi All

My electric ariel has gone kaput I think. It makes a loud grinding noise when switched on or off and the ariel itself seem to have seized in the fully extended position. Because of the shape of the ariel, do I have to get one from Toyota or can I get a replacement from somwhere else?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm in Australia so can't help with replacement in your part of the world. If it operates when ignition is turned on try this.To disable the aerial untill you replace it press gently on the top of aerial as it is attempting to go down. This will allow it to retract. Then look under dash to right side of brake and you will see the relay.Unclip from bracket and unplug the wiring connector. This will prevent aerial motor from operating and making that horrible noise.Just had mine do the same.

or disconnect the blue/orange wire from the stereo (blue=amp remote orange=leccy aerial) (not all have orange though)

I put a manual operated Bosch retractable aerial on last week and it fits but only just (the angle at the base is just that bit too steep for the aerial but it went on after a few tries). The model is Bosch Profi V 114S 511 and is suitable for anything from zero to 41 degrees of angle (I reckon the surf is way steeper than that so if I knew of a steeper option I would take it).

you can get a replacement mast from toyota and all you do is whip the top nut off turn the radio on and catch the aeril as it falls out the top then offer the new one into the hole and switch it off and feed it in as it goes downand replace the nut.
so much to do , so little money , so little time

Thanks for all the replies. One thing puzzles me though. I can't see a top nut to undo. It just looks like a round metal thing with 4 grooves in it. Is this it? and if it is, how do I undo it?

              Thanks in advance

Yup, with a special spanner or carefully with Mole grips.
