Electric fan switch

some might remember me posting about a switch for the electric fan in front of the rad - i want to force it on if I like.
So took the grille out this morning and broke all remaining clips and unplugged the fan, all I have is 2 wires to the fan that dissapear into the loom some where. How does the temp cut in work on it and am I going to be able to do what I want?

It works by removal of the earth. Plug it back in again on the fan and remove the plug on the thermostat housing, electric fan should now cut in if the ignition is on. If you want to swithc it manually, just run a cuple of cables to the dashboard and wire up a switch which makes and breaks the circuit - i.e. cut the cable to the plug on the thermostat, connect one end of the cable to the switch and from the other side of the sitch back to the thermostat plug. When the switch is open then the fan will cut in, when the switch is closed then it stops working or rather works with temperature.

Tim try wire it always live, but still linked up to the sender, so it comes on regardless of the ignition.

After fitting a proper guage to Garaths Surf, the temp goes up by nearly 10 deg after you've switch the motor off.

The fan should switch on at 100 deg ish, but it won't go on if the ignition is switched off. After shutting down Garaths truck with the temp at 90, ten minute later its was on 105ish, I turned the ignition on and the fan came on and it dropped quite quick even without it running. Start it up to get the coolant circulating and to was down at 80 in no time.

My V8 used to run like this, 10 mins after stopping and going indoors, the fans would come on for a couple of mins, then go off and 5 mins later come on again for a minute.

An engine gains heat for a while when turned off, and the water stops circulating.

Good thinking batman, how do I wire it bypassing the ignition then? Nearly all the time towing, when I stop at services i let it idle then pop in and out for literally 2 mins, fans always kick on when i put the ignition on so sounds ideal if i can do it the way your saying.
Theres 2 wires on the stat, 1 is the gauge am i right cos i pulled them both and the guage is off, i think i just need to pull the small (earth?) wire and wire that to the switch, do I need to give it a seperate feed or am I just making this too complex?

Hi guys.

I'm writing from Kiribati and I am wondering if Lucky or anyone could extend your assistance out of your country.

I want my elect fan to start manually but don't know how. I've read your post and it sounds like what I want. Could you kindly send me diagrams of how to go about making the auto circuit manual? I mean I want to switch it on when I feel that the temp is climbing. Also in case I forgot to switch it on could it still work with the temp as I also want to keep it this way?

Basically you need to find the wire on the thermostat housing (there are two, you want the small one).
With the engine running pull the wire off and see if the electric fan kicks in - mine does. What you need to do is extend this wire to a switch in the cab....

Wire from somewhere<------>Switch<------>Thermostat Housing<

When you flick the switch it will be the same as you pulling the wire off and force the fan on, when you have it all connected it will be as Mr Toyota intended.
Should work but havent got round to doing mine yet.

I have recently sent a 5 page document to the Aussie Surf 'Techsite' all about this very subject.
My fan goes when:
1. I turn it on, it resets to off with igntion off.
2. The AC is turned on
3. The Thermoswitch in the T-Stat housing gets hot (92 deg for me )
This whole controller is also hooked to my own over-temp warning system.
If the document is not released on the Aussie site in the next couple of days please feel free to e-mail me on overys@yahoo.com
It is in a MS Word format and I only ask that you do not edit it or do any other wierd sh1t with it. We are all here to help each other.

Thanks a lot for the information. I saw the two wires and when I pull the one in front, the fan kicks, so this must be the wire to extend to the switch.

Sorry Simon O if I had not been able to wait. In fact I did wait but luckily I saw this forum and try my luck. Whooa there it is... ANyway I'll wait for your diagram and hope to have fun.
