  • Fuse Box Fire!

I have now covered about 650Km in my shiny 1997 surf, smelt burning on the M3 on Monday, today i went to start the surf, the lights on dash came on then went off, after investigation, the main 100 amp fuse next to the glow plug fuse was completly burned out plus the surrounding plastic and part of the glow plug fuse burned also.
Only had this 2 weeks from a dealer , anyone else had a similar problem?
It did seem to take a few winds to get the thing started from cold.... maybe the cause?

Either way i am geting on phone tommorow to talk to the Dealer!

Most likely cause of that is a simple loose connection - either between the fuse and holder or the connections to the holder. If either are dirty or loose then the contact will arc causing heat and then burning.
You will definately want a complete new fuse box as no matter how well you clean the burnt contacts on the fuse holder they will have degraded with the heat and become soft and will fail to grip the fuse properly - result - same thing again. Make sure the heat hasn't passed into the wiring as that also will be degraded.

I have a 12 month warrantie, but im covered by consumer credit rights so should not have a problem.

deffo needs a complete fusebox. there is nothing around where the fuse was anymore. just hope that the loom is ok!
