1992 2.4 TD Auto Table top Ute. The head..She's dead. I've had enough so it's time for a bigger and better pwer plant.I can get a Lexus quad cam V8 1/2 cut for A$2700 (Australian) including 5 speed, loom and computer. As there is damage to the tops of the bores on the 2.4 the total rebuild cost is about A$6000. I love my ute and want to keep it....Any ideas on a good motor/trans combo?? This Ute lives in Tasmania....Coolish weather and lots of hills.

How about a V8 out of a Holden, probably be able to get a plate to mate it to the toyota gearbox.

Have a look here, this guy fittted a 5.0 HO Ford V8 in his Surf.

You could probably pick up a 302 out of an LTD down there pretty cheap. It would be a lot less complex than the Lexus, the parts would be cheap and the driveability for a Surf would be much better cos the torque curve would be much lower down.

    Cheers

Thanks to both of you,not only for responding so quickly, but also for the quality of the info.Unfortunately(in some ways) my future son inlaw picked a particularly bad time to swap our old computer for his old one which is much better. It required some different bits so I have been unable to respond to you both sooner.I am sussing out the info over the next few days and will let you know in the next couple of weeks which way I,ve gone. THANKS!!!
