it's not a problem to change it ... got the tools and all ...
was just worried that the gearbox is gone since it shouldn't be black! If not mistaken, it was changed 3 years ago; or is that too long to leave it?! I thought it should never change colour!
To be honest, I only found out coz I pulled out the engine+gearbox assembly since I'm changing over to 3.0lt diesel+auto box from a 1KZ as well. But if I had to sell the petrol engine to a friend, I wouldn't want to give him a gearbox that's on its way out! But if you say it's just a symptom of very old oil, then I'll put my mind at rest when selling it, and just confirm that one of my friends isn't a friend at all after all, since he was supposed to change it for me when I bought the truck! Some friends!

However long ago it was changed is of no significance, its down to how many miles its done.
If the box is running ok then you won't have any problems as long as you change the ATF as soon as.
not too many miles as I live in Malta which is an extremely small island and fuel is extremely expensive here when compared to our wages!!! So no, not too many miles!
As for high temperatures ... well yes, that's for sure! we never get a real winter here! lowest it's ever been here that i remember is +12 degrees centigrade, and that's at night!
Thanks a lot for the input guys, greatly appreciated ...
Poor quality ATF breaks down a lot quicker too. It forms an actual friction bearing surface inside the gearbox and torque converter. I always use Comma MV ATF or good quality Dexron III fluid in my Aisin-Warner boxes.
EDIT:
How healthy is your transmission oil cooler (I think its the bottom part of the main radiator on the surf). If it has poor efficiency, the ATF will be getting too hot and breaking down as a result.

the oil cooler is right next to the gearbox itself on mine!
however, I'm in the process of changing the engine and gearbox assembly from petrol to the 1KZ-TE 3.0lt diesel with auto box too. So I'll be starting from scratch on this one by filling with good oil as you suggested!
