What is this Pipe-Bypassing

Hi

I saw some modification/bypass of a pipe (attached photo) in my surf 1997 2.7L petrol surf but I dont know why the previous owner in Japan did this kind of bypass.
Please note that YELLOW line indicate bypassed pipe and two small GREEN lines indicated disconnected pipes and finally Green marks shows the metal connections.

Does any body know the reasons and why,

Looks (to me) like they've bypassed a heater somewhere, probably because of a leaking heater matrix. Do all your heaters work?

Yup. I can't even remember exactly what they were like as they are yonks old, but the Brownie's were a compact camera of the day. The word compact is used loosely, BTW.

Do you have a rear heater and does it blow hot air once everything has warmed up.
The rear heater is situated under the centre console/armrest thingy between the front seats and blows hot air onto the back seat passenger compartment. Sit in the rear, look down and forward, youll see it. Vent for air outlet, slider control for temp and switch for fan.

That other metal pipe with a short hose on it that's not connected to anything at one end. Trace that back, and you'll find your rear matrix.

I checked with rear heater it doesnt blow hot air at all.
Is it the cause of this by pass?

It looks very much like it has been bypassed, probably because of a leak, either in the supply or return lines or in the matrix itself. Dont know about you but its something I could live without.
