  • So who knows about V6s then?

Being an impatient child, I am very seriously considering ditching my 2.4 and getting hold of something a bit quicker and less weird. I don't do a lot of mileage so I thought a V6 would be fun....

I'm going to go have a look at one at the weekend and was hoping someone might have some pointers on what to look out for. Obviously, all the usual stuff (kick the tyres and push each corner down...... ) plus the essential Codlord list, but anything specific to the V6 engine?

From what I can ascertain, head gaskets can get a bit dodgy - just a case of looking for the old mayonnaise and checking the coolant for oil on that one? Also some problems with cooling? No change there then eh?.... Is the problem in the radiators or the whole lot?

Anyway, all opinions welcome and gratefully received as ever.

It may be cheaper to run too. with petrol prices less than diesel!

The only major problem is the headgaskets fail, look for coolant dripping out the exhaust on starting or lack of water whwn checking it.

Most have been done by now, they rarely last more than 70,000miles on the original sets. The new gaskets are OK.

I think most of the V6's are uk spec cars so have a look out for rust, bottom of the doors is the only place mine has any (well that worries me). If you can get a jap on with low milage go for it, I love mine so much better that the other fuel ones!!!
Then you just need a few mods to really get it sounding good, stainless exhaust and get rid of all the air intake pipes and go for a K&n of similar system.

Is the V6 Surf mechanically similar to the 4runner? Will 4runner engine bits (technical term) go straight in?

I was thinking older (2nd gen), cheaper, sooner.

Thanks for the offer though Richard.

All I can say about the V6 is that they are freekin excellent fun , we had a V6 for a while last year and it was a fantastic drive , excellent ammount of power too, plus they are cheaper which is always a plus point.

                          Hey Sancho!!!

Did you see this V6 on ebay??

The auction's just finished, but it didn't reach the reserve.. Might be worth contacting the seller?

                          It just does, OK?

I did see that one. I want a manual though. That way I can pretend it's as economical as a 3.0TD.

Seriously though, I kind of like manuals and it would be a shame to waste the power on a nasty auto box. I think my 2.4's off to have rather a lot of work done to it to make it more reliable, a little more spritely and a little better looking. I would flog it and buy something better, but I'm going to lose so much cash I figure I may as well keep digging and at least have 'my' money pit.

Anyone want a 2.4 with a new head going cheap? Shout now before I start spending.

The V6 I had a go in last week was very, very nice.....
