  • Surf V6 Info Request: South Africa

I have recently bought a 92 SSRG V6 Surf with 328 000km on the clock (currently 339000). As Surfs were never sold in South Africa, there is very little info or Surfs in the country and the ones that are here are all grey products. It would be greatly appreciated if somebody could advise me on the following:
    1. As the tappits are noisy, what should be the clearances?
    2. Can this engine run on unleaded petrol? The country will be changing over to unleaded in 2006.
    3. Can I put in a 3.4liter Prado Engine as these are available in South Africa.

    Best Regards
    Henk

    1. I have a 94 v6 and sometimes the tappits are a little noisy on warm up - I am unsure whether these are self adjusting
    2. yes you can run it unleaded fuel - in the Uk we only have unleaded but octanes do vary
    3. I would think that the engine mounts would be different

Welcome to our world!! (it is a little mad!!)

What part of SA are you in??

You should be ok in SA as you guys have loads of hilux's and double cab toyota pickups (backies to you) they are all very similar for most parts so you should be able to get spares for your beast no problem.

The valve lash is set by shims, its a bugger of a job and needs a special tool to open the valve and get the shims out/in.

But you can check them quite easily.

I scan the manual tonight and post it up. (I may need remimding........)

              Gents

Thanks for the info so far. As far as I know, the Prado Engine is the same as the 3.4 Engine in the new Surf/4Runner. I was hoping that somebody might have done the conversion before.

As far as spares are concerned, there are many Hiluxes in South Africa, so for most of the spares it is not a problem. I have 2 concerns only, Engine and Gearbox, it seems the gearbox is extremely similar to the Cressida gearbox. WIll be able to confirm in the next couple of days as currently the pilot bearing is being replaced and the rest of the box being checked for concerns.

Should anybody require specific photos of the clutch plate, pilot bearing or open gearbox, please let me know.

              Regards
              Henk

Henkm hoe gaan dit in Suid Afrika? Apolgies for my afrikaans but a long time since I have written it. Wherabouts are you in SA. We used to live in PInetown outside Durban. Wish I had the Surf when we lived there as it would have been great on the beaches etc.
                Cheers,
