22RE into Surf?

Hi Everyone - I have been lurking on this forum since I signed up a bit ago. Since signing up I have lost the engine in the Surf I imported from Japan. The head was completely cracked and It was super pitted around the valves and could not be saved sadly. Came like it from Japan and only got to drive it a few months.

Just wondering if anyone knows what the best / cost efficient swap into a ln130w surf would be. (besides putting the same engine back in). Right now I'm thinking 1KZ or 22RE which is the 3l diesel for the 3rd gens and gas engine for the 4Runner here in North America.. Anyone have any experience in this it would be greatly appreciated

The easiest route would be to change the head.
An engine from a newer 3.0 diesel will require a fair bit if work, including engine mounts, loom to name but a few and the same complexities for changing to a gas engine.
If you would consider changing the engine do your local laws permit the fitting of the 1uzfe engine?
