vince dont know if you seen this thread? it would cost £160 to get the lexus speedo working properly, its a bit steep i know but i do prefer the lexus head up to the surf one hehe! do you know or anyone who reads this tread any one here that could the same?
This is a little sketchy (I only looked into it briefly when putting the trans' together), and maybe stuff you've looked at already but..
The sensor in the surfs transfer box (on mine anyways) is similar to the lex item, the gearing is different and the body thicker so it's not feasable to just swap them, however the caps with the electronics in are interchangeable (held on with the 3 pozi screws). The lex cap, does cover the hole for the fixing screw tho, so a new one would need to be drilled and tapped to hold the sensor.
As I said..it was only a quick investigation as I'm no where near ready to be worrying about the speedo, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work..the surf part of the sensor picks up your pulses and the lex part makes sense of them for the clocks.

Not as simple as that, it counts the revolutions of the output shaft from the transfercase. The gear wheel on the Surf's sensor is larger so it turns slower giving a 'half pulse', the Lexus speedo needs a full pulse otherwise it 'reads' half the speed.
The hard way to sort it out would be to chage the drive gear on the output shaft in the transfercase to give the correct number of revolutions.
The easy way is to fit a signal converter, that way you can factor in the size of tyre the truck has to get an acurate speed reading for the Lexus speedo.
I guessed it may not be as easy as that, or I'm sure it would of been sussed out already..but, RMA fellow hybridised a sensor, putting the worm gear off the lex onto his 4-runner body (which was only 1tooth out) and claimed he got the same 3:1 ratio as the lex. If it's spinning at the same rate, yet still giving half the pulses, that indicates a 10 pole MRE which I can't find any information on. Toyota already use the 20 pole across multiple models, I don't see the logic of switching to a 10.??
hi Vince sorry didnt get back sooner. have put this bit of the project on back burner been enjoying clock free miles lately! plus been busy doing other stuff! did have a look at the thread you send from yodatech (i think) but havent tried it out yet.
was going to wait for nick to try and figure it out!
i have been using the rpm to gauge my speed OD 1400rpm = 30mph OD 1600 = 40mph all i need to know hehe!
the convertor looks like it would work but will probably twice the price after tax and pagaging etc will investigate
Does the OBDII port still work after the transplant? If so then could you niot just use something like a scan gauge (they also tell you loads of other stuff which is cool) I have one for my forester, it also gets the codes which can be useful.
i think i am right in saying the only infomation the ECU will have is the revs as speed sensor 1 just takes in to account revs only for the auto box to change gear. speed sensor 2 which is connected to the rear prop shaft at the transfer case is for the speedo only and a back up if speed sensor 1 doenst work.
so the only way you can tell how fast you are going is from speed sensor 2 which is the surf speed sensor giving 4 pulses per rev and the lexus clock needs 20 hence speed oreads 5th of the speed you are going
unfortunately it is OBD1 so its a sequence of lights flashing on the dash for fault codes!
having just done a very quick google search am i right in thinking that if you went for a 1uzfe from a post 1996 car then it would be obdii, which would allow you the funky dash cluster.
