Surf Advice And Information

The Surf is my preferred choice for a 4x4, primarily for my next overland trip across the Sahara (previously by motorcycle). I'm looking at 3.0 litre diesels but not sure on auto or manual. Any experience out there of similar trips with Surfs and advice on which to go for?

Thanks for your reply. My main question is manual v. auto. Most Surfs up for sale seem to be autos and I'm not sure if they would be up to the trips that I do (across the Sahara, on rough African roads, etc). Should I stick out for a manual?

I have no experience of driving autos but do have lots of experience of driving manual 4x4s offroad in Southern Africa, and so I made a decision based on that experience. If I was to intelectualise it: I bought a manual mainly because it gives me more control over the amount of torque going to the wheels and because it is one less thing to go wrong - manual gear boxes are more likely to be fixable by a bush mechanic and I also don't know if you can "bump" start an automatic in an emergency.
