  • alternator, tension & bolts, again!

Well, I've just done a search for 'adjust alternator' and it's come up with nowt, surprises me that.

Anyhow, it appears that I asked for the wrong bolt from 'yota, I wanted an tensioning bolt and that's what I got. What I NEEEEEED, is the bolt that goes through the rubber block on the tensioning bolt and secures into the base of the alternator.

    Does anyone know it's dimensions??

The parts man said that it's special to imports, I asked 'is it not the same as a 3ltr 4Runner?'
'No' he said, 'all special sizes for imports.'

    'Rollocks' I thought.

And another thing, to tension the belts & alternator, what other bolts do I need to loosen, (I know, dim question)

    Cheers.....

If it's the one I think, I replaced it with a standard m6 (I think or maybe M8 - 12mm head anyway) thread bolt and a spring type washer (the lock washer type). A bolt about 1 1/2 inches long should do the job and will probably come throught the other sode of the alternator, you can then put a nut on the back as a locknut (use a nylocking nut).

Your local guy don't know Jack Schidt basically, pretty sure it's the same as a 3.0 TD runner. Also the same as a Hilux Pickup I would think.

    Cheers

I seem to remember on mine that there is one bolt that needs to be lossened - the one that the Alternator pivots on, you then loosen the pinch bolt (the one you are missing), adjust the long bolt that actually adjusts the tension, then tighten the pinch bolt and the swivel bolt.

          Cheers

This bolt may be called a Tensioner or Adjuster Lock Bolt.I had to replace mine as it was broken and end was still stuck in alternator.Alternator had to come out to remove so got it checked and new seal and bearing installed between vacuum pump and alternator.Fairly sure if it was 8mm but is just a normal metric bolt.Better to use a high tensile in these as they are often broken.
