  • auto box lost drive

    hi,
My 94 3.0td auto box has lost all drive. it was Ok before this it seems to have lost a lot of oil before failure. I could not see any oil dripping but the sump area was wet. I tightened the sump pan bolts and refilled. I drove fine for a few miles and lost all drive. I had do drive it a mile with at 5mph with the engine screaming to get it off the road. I wonder if this has burnt up the transmission. If anyone knows where to pick up a used box let me know. Also where would you buy replacment parts and tourqe converter. to rebuild the transmission myself. I have rebuilt some american GM boxes years ago with no problems. If I can get the parts I will go at it and make a vidio of the rebuild.

HILUX (Bob) or Streetluge Chris on here might be able to help you with it. As regards to parts for the box, I would think Toyota are going to be the best bet. Not sure that anyone else would have them although if you have an autobox specialist near you you may be able to get the parts from them.

Sounds very much like one of the clutch band packs has burnt out. You may be lucky with the Torque converter however that may be what has broken and caused the oil to be dumped out.

Not sure how easy it will be to rebuild as I haven't looked inside one, however like you, I did rebuild a TH350 box a few years ago and it was easy as anything - complete rebuild in 2 hours including new clutches, Torque converter, uprated valve body, new gaskets etc. I doubt if the Toyota box will be as easy as that though.

    Cheers

      Autobox

Hi l use to run a garage repairing auto boxes, but l had to close it due to ill health in 1992 then we use to use a place called "ATP" of Preston. Myself and "Chris" both have auto boxes for sale but they are off the "2.4" engines and will not fit the 3litre engine, l am not sure but l dont think the bellhousings will swop over. You could always do a search on the "NET" for parts suppliers.

An outfit in the USA sell rebuild kits. Transmission exchange Co.
        A Master Overhaul Kit for a Toyota 4 runner 4x4 1994 A340 trans is $207.69 (US).
The kit includes all gaskets, seals, sealing rings, orings, lip
seals, friction plates, steel plates. An ATSG tech manual is $15.50. torque converter is $125.06 exchange - core deposit $45.00
Total cost for parts and manual is: $393 + postage.
This sounds like a good deal to me.
Question is will the parts fit my transmission, I do not think the 3.0td 4 runner is sold in the USA. They will be all petrol models.
I think the kit will fit but the torque converter has to be different.
Who sells converters in the UK ? I will also try Toyota for this item.

You might be able to have the torque converter rebuilt if it's just the seals gone rather than the vanes inside snapped and mashed.

I had my auto box repaired by a specialist when I broke one of the bands. He said that it was the same gearbox as a Jeep and others.

So I reckon the parts should be easy to come by.
