My poor neglected 1996 Surf has been sitting since it died on me last year. It turns over fine, but will not start. There is fuel getting to the injection lines.

How do I check to see if it is the ECU?

When it turns over are you getting any white smoke from the exhaust, if you are it could indicate that the glow plugs are shot, i went through this early on in the year the truck was getting harder to start, the worse it got the more white smoke it produced until not starting , a new set of glow plugs (around £80.00) and I was back on the road.

      No smoke at all.

Is there a way to check them? And even at 30 degree celcius, wouldn't it start?

Gives a cough to turn over, but doesn't catch and keep going.

A bot of a colder morning in the fall, near freezing, was running really rough. I barely got it back home from a few blocks away, and couldn't get it started again.

Have you tried a compression test?

No, I haven't tried a compression test. It's time to get back into it and see what I can find out and get her on the road again.

Any chance that the timing might have skipped a tooth, as the timing belt is due for a change?

No chance to get a compression kit yet, but I did crack a couple of fuel injectors. When turning it over, how much fuel should be coming out of there if they are cracked? Just wet, or more?

It turns over like a champ...just absolutely not coughing whatsoever.
