  • ECU wanted for 3.0surf gen 2

    Hi...
    im new to this forum
i looking for an ECU for my 3.0 auto surf gen 2
Part No 86991-3D100 if anyone can help

Ive lost overdrive..i did the manual test by unplugging the 3pin plug and the
    overdrive does work using D..
So that just leaves the ECU faulty would you say?

    thanks Guys

    trying repairing first

its very likely you have bad capacitors in your ECU...try and have it repaired
first....you can take it to an electronics repair person that repairs TVs etc...
    its not a hard fix...

Why do you suspect it is a capacitor, is there a history of a certain one being at fault? I have what I think is a malfunctioning ECU, no output, I am yet to gain access to remove and strip and immediately suspect that it will be a dry or cracked soldered joint.

However if thee is a known capacitor problem can someone please confirm and identify.

        Many thanks

Capacitors have a very limited life - often only a few years - and any car that has an analogue computer and is over 20 years old, and hasn't had the ECU refurbished, is sure to have swollen capacitors. You can purchase a full set of caps. very cheaply and have them fitted reasonably cheaply, as suggested above.

Yes, capacitors will fail over time. The 3Ltr Auto seems to suffer more than others. Losing overdrive is usually a cap problem.

I have taken the ECU out and had a look inside...
all the capacitors i can see look fine, no swollen or leaking ones..
should i still have it looked at by a specialist or could it be something else troubling the overdrive
i have heard on here that the temperature sensor on the cylinder head could be the cause, and to be honest i have noticed in the last month that the temp gauge doesnt move much on the needle??!

              thanks guys

                Capacitor test & Overdrive Switch

To Be perfectly honest,to actually perform a proper test on a capacitor, you have to remove it from the circuit board,& to remove a 20 year old capacitor & replace it is nuts! If your capacitors don't look swollen or leaking the chances are they are OK,however the visual test is only a "Seat Of The Pants Test" Ive seen visually perfect capacitors that have failed tests.
Moving on to your Overdrive Issues, when you say 3 pin plug test? Do You mean the actual overdrive switch plug which goes to the overdrive switch on the gear lever/selector? As Ive had 2 friends with surfs have overdrive issues, and both were due to the switch being dirty and not making contact. The drinks holder is above and drips etc drop down onto this then dirt get added into the mix.The switches required totally dismantling cleaning in warm water, then blowing out with an air gun.

                  Hi Mate,,

I have the same issue as you with the overdrive. Can you tell me how you got on with this issue please.

                  Regards

                  Andy
