Well guys you were correct, the head was dead! 4 cracks in total, between valve seats.
I decided on the AMC head in the end and got a price I was 'happy' with direct from my mechanic. As per recommendations I also changed the water pump, low temp thermo, cam belt kit and all new auxiliary belts. Motor starts like a dream and runs and sounds very 'tight'
