Thanks for that,, i have a non intercooled with a throttle cable and i have offered parts from an intercooled ,but it turns out the intercooled that is being broken has fly by wire. Im wondering if it will work for me to try and fit the intercooler to mine?
I think i saw somewhere that the rocker covers are slightly lower on intercooled? This might be a problem...If anyone has made the change or
has any info i'd be greatful
Is there a big difference between the two models?
Is the intercooler change worth the change?
Regards g1xer
To do a swap from normal turbodiesel to I/C turbodiesel you need quite a lot of parts - been there, done it.
The list is:
Bonnet with scoop
Intercooler
Inlet manifold
Rocker cover
Throttle cable
ECU
Various bits of pipe for the heater/cooling system
Various sensors and are in different positions and therefore need different lengths of wire/pipe.
It took 2-3 days of intermittent work. I also removed the EGR at the same time which freed up some space around the back of the engine.
Worth it for the result though. Noticeably more urge at motorway speeds and when towing.

The ecu change gives it the fuelling at the right points to make use of the cooler air. You could prob do something the same with variable resistors, a boost controller and a rolling road.
I have found intercooled TDs to be much more drivable. Not as stark as a diesel to a turbo diesel but the same kinda leap in refinement. If that can ever be said for a derve.
Tuning up the boost, timing and fuelling on a roilling road would help take avantage of an intercooler if you didnt have the ecu to match. Mind you all three of those will also help any surf as the engines come detuned from toyota.
There are two correction resistors on the side of the pump, one timing, one fuel. Those replaced with variable pots and a boost controller give the tuner his tools with which to balance the motor and make it go better.
Most people seem to leave the fuelling, replace the timing resistor with a 1.5kohm one and up the boost a bit but this is pretty ghetto as far as tuning goes. A rolling road tunes to your engine.
