  • glow plugs

Since having my cylinder head and other parts renewed I have been experiencing difficulty in starting this progressed until the engine wouldn't start, so after investigation using a multi meter and testing the glow plugs, all 4 glow plugs were shot, so replaced glow plugs (£72.00) started engine checked the power rail , not switching off , order new gp relay from Toyota (£60.00) fitted now all ok the power switches off to the glow plugs after about 90 secs.
So the relay malfunction burnt out the glow plugs as they were on continually and I assume each failed until none were working.
I now assume that the timing circuit is within the relay , though it made no difference to the dash light which still only illuminates for about 2 seconds, I am going to open the old relay up and see what makes it tick, hopefully the circuit won't be potted.

the ecu does all the glow timing.
the relay is just a relay. most likely it welded the contacts together.

post some pics when you get it open. always good to see how stuff fails.

That's normal. Yeah, I'd like to see pics of the relay once you get it open.

When I opened up the relay every thing was ok and it operated ok so have put the none starting down to the failure of the glow plugs over a short period of time . If they were fitted at the same time then I would expect them to fail at about the same time together.
