I can only think cracked head

I have come to terms with it and am going to order a new head kit from RT. What other things would i change/look out for and do. I've never done a head change before so if there are any write ups this would be really helpful.How long should it take as i need to do a Devon trip in 2 weeks with it.

It is a Gen2 3l surf and anything that you feel would help me would be great.

As well as changing the head, renew the water pump and the timing belt at the same time ( as well as the timing belt tensioner ). Once you have all the parts to hand, you can do it in a day if it all goes smoothly.
There's a few write ups on here, I did mine a couple of years ago over the summer ( only had enough time to spend a couple hours a day ). Even though it was the first one I'd done, found it very straight forward.

did you checked the radiator? it might be oil cooler (ATF) mixing with water. is it other symptoms related with that conclusion? that the head its gone.

I just assumed that it was the head after reading on here members previous problems.I don`t know a great deal about the engine side of things. How do i check the ATF ?
Hope it is this where would i be without the help from this site its great. Thanks rebelv8 for timescales

im guessing yours its an automatic,
if it is you can check for oil level on a second dipstick i think its red.
if you want to check the colour of it, you can release one of the small hoses at the bottom of the rad, and collect a bit and you will see if the right color or watery.

Hi, I've got similar problems to yours. I put about a litre of water in the rad every day & the coolant is bubbling in the expansion tank! I've had some good help from the knowledgable Guys on this forum & the symptoms are pointing to a cracked head. I checked RT a few days ago & they're out of stock of the head kits for the KZN130 3.0 litre at the moment. Does your Surf need constant topping up with coolant/water? check your oil level too as my oil level raises because water is getting in. ( When I undid sump plug some water came out). Good Luck with changing your head. I'm in the same boat. I've only ever changed a head on an old Ford x- Flow engine!

Check it's not the oil cooler & rad water mixing....I've had that before and spent money getting the head done only to find out it was the oil cooler

This was odd and looks like it indicates the head gasket/head.If you start it up straight from cold with the rad cap off it froths up straight away pushing the water out of the rad.(exhaust gas pressure ???)
There is no oil in the water and no water in the oil.Nothing comes out of the exhaust that shouldn't and the truck runs fine no missing or poor idle.I have left the car on a slope with the cap off to see if the level changes and it stays the same.
I know a sniff test would show if there is any carbon in the water but what do they use to do this as i would buy one and test it as i cannot drive it anywhere to get tested.

Same Again??

It must be the season for it.

My wife has just returned home from work in her KZN185 (3.0L Diesel) saying that the temp gauge had gone off the scale and that it sounded like water was boiling in the radiator. I went to have a look at yes the water was boiling in the rad and the expansion tank was empty, but no sign of any water outside of where it should be. I also checked the oil and couldn't see any signs of water in it. I waited for it to cool down a bit and put some water in the rad and then started it up.

First I saw bubbles coming up through the coolant tank and secondly white smoke/steam coming out of the exhaust.

Am I right in assuming that we therefore have a blown head gasket or the dreaded cracked head?

Is there anyone in the Exeter area of Devon that knows about this stuff or can recommend a competent repairer please?
